Ski
Today was the most exciting day during the winter break. Me and my family went skiing to YONG PYUNG skiing resort. First we packed our bagages for 2-days schedule. Then me and my brother rushed outside to borrow a ski for today and tommorow. I could tell my brother was also very excited because he forgot to wear his socks before he put his shoes in. When we were prepared and everything, we went on sky lift to take us up on the slope. Now that I was at the top, I took a deep breath and SHOOSH~ The feeling I had during the short ride was unexplainable. I dont know but I think it was a mixture of thrill, and trepidation. I drew an A sign with my feet to stop at the end. The moment I finally stopped, it was just AWESOME.

battle of the labryinth
Battle of the labryinth (Book 4 of Percy Jakson series)
By Rick Riodran
Rating: *****
I finished the book Battle of the labryinth almost 1 month ago. I guess I didn't blog about books too much and forgot about it. Anyway, since I have the whole time to myself, I thought I might just post about the book now.
As I mentioned above, this book is the 4th book of Percy Jakson series. I've done a blog post about the 3rd one, the Titan's curse, so you might know what this is about. But for other people, this book is about greek mythology. There are gods, and olympus. Some of you might know about this because well, greek gods are famously known around the world even to the western side. Anyway, there is our hero Percy. He is a son of Poseidon, who is the sea god. In this book, he and his friends; Annabeth, Grover and his half-brother cyclops, Tyson. Together they plunge themselves into the darkness of the Labryinth, which is a maze that can never be solved. In the journey, they meet the wild god, Pan, and they manage to hold off the attack of the mighty Titans, but there are more and more coming endlessly.
My favorite part of this book is when Percy fights the telekhies, who are sea demons. In this part, he uses the power from his father, and brings up a huge tidal wave to the demons and destroy them. Here every telekhies dissolve into nothing, (by the way, when monsters get killed, they discinegrate). This was so cool because this was like about the 1st time he actually used his most powerful ability, which explained him passing out for a week.

Geo skills
1. List the main reasons for water scaricity.
Answer:
-Hot places like deserts have low rainfall.
-Land degradation
-The variations in climate
-Population growth
-Water pollution
-Arid areas have average rainfall below 300mm each year.
2. What is a drought? What type of hardships do you think that a drought could cause if you were living in a village in a poor country such as Ethiopia?
Answer:
Drought is when there is less precipitation than usual. Droughts can cause many death to people due to thirst.
3. How does land degradation affect the supply of fresh water?
Answer:
If the land is paved off or damaged, this can cause problems for the groundwater storage under the ground which is all drinkable. Therefore, the ground won't be able to absorb much of the heavy rainfalls and there will be a lack of groundwater storage.
4.
(a) What is El Nino?
Answer:
A warming that happens in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Peru. El Nino happens every 3-5 years or so.
(b) Why does El nino often cause drought in Australia?
Answer:
During El Nino, the moist blows to the pacific ocean reverse their direction. This process is accompanied by a reversal air pressure from across the pacific, resulting in high pressure systems over Autralia. This prevents the moist tropical air masses reaching Australia.
5. Observe the map showing the global effects of El Nino in 1982~83.
(a) What effects does El Nino have on the availability of fresh water?
Answer:
El Nino creates a heavy rainfall that might lead to serious floods. When floods occur, these effect the availability of fresh water because the water gets polluted and therefore there is a very little amount of fresh water left.
(b) Name the countries and describe the problems that arose from decreased rainfall cause by El Nino.
Answer:
-Australia: Serious droughts.
-Africa: Reduced corn crop growing.
-Indonesia: High pollution level in the air due to forest fires.
-China: Land in threat due to droughts and floods.
-Papua New Guinea: Unable to grow crops because of droughts.
-Peru: Flood. Lower catch of fishing as anchovy and pacific sardline move offshore.
-Colombia: 20% decrease in catching fish.
-United States: Average rainfall exceeds. (Double the historical averages)

any1 know how to put a power point on a blog? somebody tell me PLEASE!!
Bintaro Lama field trip
My homeroom classmates rode on the bus to make our way to Bintaro Lama, which took us about 35 minutes or so. I was pretty excited, because I was eager how people there cleaned their water and I also wanted to see the enviroment if it was clean or not. In this blog post, I will write about 3 stations where me and my partners (Si won and Brandon) got to look at.
The first station, which was station #6, we learnt 2 ways to disinfect water and make the water potable. The guide showed us a tablet called Aqua tabs. 1 or 2 tablets can clean 30L of water at once. Now thats what I call awesome. What they do is that they will add the Aqua tab and let it dissolve. This process doesn't take very long, so it is a proficient and fast way to get access to clean water. Another method, is adding a liquid called Air Rahmat. By 5 ml of this liquid is about enough to purify 1 gallon of water. However, after pouring Air Rahmat, you will have to shake it at least 30 seconds.
The second station was station #2. In this station, we learnt the whole infrastructure of how food gets contaminated. They told us that after pooing (^_^) , they clean it with tissue and some don't wash their hands after it. Then the bacteria in the fecus gets on their hands and when they make food or touch the food, the food will get contaminated and it can give you a really bad stomachache. After learning about that, the guide told us about 5 ways to prevent that. One of that was building a proper toilet, which made pretty good sense to me.
The last station was station #4. This station was very interesting, because they had the same idea of cleaning water in the water treatment plant I went to, but a miniature version of it. First, they put a liquid called PUR, which helps the dirt particles to stick together and form a flock. Then the sedimentation begins. The flocks fall down to the bottom of the water, settling down there. Another way was filtration. They used a big bucket with a clay pot in it, and they lay pieces of cloth on the pot. What happens is that when dirty water goes through, the garbage and all the big trashes are left behind the cloth. Very interesting, because they had the same idea in the water treatment plant.
I think it was pretty cool to visit a kampung like this. Well, there were a lot of trash and bugs, but there were really friendly and kind people which put me under no pressure of asking any questions. Oh and at the end, they taught us a caroll that tells about washing your hands. It followed the rythm of 'If you're happy and you know it clap your hands', so I though it was another cool activity they prepared for us.

Activities in Geoactive book
1. What percentage of the world's supply of water is fresh water?
Answer: 2.5 percent of water on earth.
2. Where is the world's supply of fresh water found?
Answer: 2% is in form of glaciers, 0.49% is in the ground, and 0.01% is found in atmospheres, rivers and lakes.
3. Even though the supply of fresh water is abundant it is still a problem. Why?
Answer: Because water is a fixed resource. The amount of water can't be increased or decreased, while the population is growing fast.
4. Observe the map of world average annual precipitation (opposite).
(a) Describe the changes in rainfall that occur as you move from the southern to the northern tip of Africa.
Answer: As moving on from the tropic of cancer where the rainfall is extremely low, you can see the amount of rainfall raising.
(b) Describe the changes in rainfall that occur as you move from the western to the eastern tip of Australia along the Tropic of Capricorn.
Answer: You can see that as moving on to the eastern tip, the water drops suddenly about at the middle of australia, and rise again at the tip.
5. Observe the map above of water availability per person.
(a) Which parts of the world appear to have a large amount of water available per person?
Answer: South America seems to have no problem to accessing water.
(b) Which parts of the world appear to have a samll amount of water per person?
Answer: Europe seems to have small amount of water per person.
6. Observe the diagram of water use.
(a) What are the main uses of water?
Answer: The water is mainly used for agriculturing.
(b) Which uses have increased the most over the last century?
Answer: Reservoir losses from evaporation and seepage seems to have risen the most.

Trip to water treatment plant
As my classmates and I rode on the bus to the water treatment plant, we saw a dirty river full of garbages people threw. And at that time, I had no idea that this water here was going to be potable. In this post, I will be talking about the infrastucture of the water treatment plant.
The first step is percolating the big pieces of garbages. The first thing I saw was a huge gate and the river water going through the long and thin metal poles. The gate collected the big pieces of garbage, for example. tires, cans, bottles, bannana peelings, etc... you get the idea.
The second step is aeration, which is oxigentating the water, adding mineral. In the treatment plant, there is a huge turbo swirling around the water like a vortex. What it does is that when the turbo is spinning, it's giving oxygen to the water that didn't have any oxygen.
The thrid step is adding alum. Alum is a chemical that causes the dirt particles to come together and make a floc, which makes it easier for the next process to collect the dirt particles out of the water.
The fourth step is sedimentation. They let the water stay still for a while until all the flocs of dirt particles settle to the ground. At this point, water is saturated. Also, an interesting fact I've found out is that the dirt particles don't just get thrown away. In fact, they use it to help build houses in the kampung areas.
The fifth step is filtration, and disinfection. The final filter takes out all the leftover flocs and other garbages that made through the steps. After getting rid of them, they add a chemical called clorn, which disinfects the water, destroying all the bacteria left.
Finally, the last step is checking the water qualities. In this step, people in the lab check the water is clean or not. The more infected the water is, the color gets yellower, and if it is safe to drink, the color is transparent. This is a very important step to go through, because even if the water is filtered, there might be tiny bits of dirt particles still remaining in the water.
When I came back from the trip, I learned TONS of stuff there. I have to say I was surprised at how much I learned. I've seen things I've never seen before, and I think it was a great experience to have, learning about how and where the water we drink everyday come from.

An interview with Scott Westerfeld the author. Sorry that it's late, but still hope you enjoy the show!
The Tiger
Here's a poem called 'The Tiger' by William Blake. Sorry for the 3rd part, because my cameraman Young Woo was distracted by something and the camera shaked a little. Well, besides that, I think me and Young Woo did a pretty good job. Hope you enjoy the show!

Beowulf
Just finished the book Beowulf! The book was recommended by my good english teacher, Mr.Hughes. He told me it was a serious story but written in comic version. After I looked at it, I kinda liked the drawing by Gareth Hinds, so what the heck. I'll give it a try. So here is a story about a brave man called Beowulf.
Beowulf, a young man who was born with such great power and intellect. They say it was a gift from god. Unlike all other men, he battles with monsters and slices them with great ease, and defeats them. One day, he was called to reinforce the great king
Hrothgar, a man who valued Beowulf when he was a child. A fiend called Grendel was killing Hrothgar's men and was ruining the great hall that Hrothgar has built. When Beowulf arrived on Hrothgar's land, he had a big feast before the fearsome fight. The following night, as usual, Grendel came. He and Beowulf had a fierce battle, and they fought for their own victories. At the end, Beowulf had cut Grendel's arm and Grendel fled. He trophied the arm and hanged it on the roof of the great hall. Beowulf was given many prizes and jewels from the great king Hrothgar. But he knew that he had another enemy to face; Grendel's mother, the sea serpent.
Now there's a lot of exciting actions, and the story itself is pretty cool. And I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the drawing by Gareth Hinds. There's a movie about this story, and you might've watched it. You should give it a try. This comic version is not so long, and it is easy to read and understand because again, thanks to Mr.Gareth. :D

The Titan's Curse
Titans Curse
*****
By Rick Riodran
Recently I finished the book "Titan's Curse." I took a long time to put a book on the blog huh? Well, I will try to work on NOT abandoning books from now on. For the sake of blogging, I decided to put a post up. Here goes.
The Titan's curse is about a 14-year boy called Percy Jackson and his friends saving his friends. He is the son of Poseidon (The god of sea). There is also Grover the satyr, Thaila the son of Zeus (God of the sky), Zoe and Bianca the hunters. Together they go on a journey to free Annabeth (Daughter of Athena, the goddess of moon) and Artemis, who is a goddess of hunting herself from Atlas (Titan who is holding up the sky) and the Titan Lord. However, there is an oracle that said 2 will die in the journey. With that thought in mind, they still decide to go on the adventure. Read the book to find out!
My best part of the book was when Atlas and Artemis was having a fight. I have to admit that the author did a very good job of describing the situation. Atlas fighting with a huge javelin and Artemis fighting with double edged wicked dagger as long as her arm. They tried to kill each other with rage, but Atlas's power overwhelmed Artemis. Then she had a plan. That time, Percy was holding up the sky, which should've been Atlas. She gave a signal to Percy to back out from the sky when she kicked Atlas in that direction. Percy understood, and braced himself from possible death. When Artemis kicked Atlas in the direction, Percy quickly rolled out of the way and the sky almost squished Atlas. He managed to get up and hold up the sky, but he burst out with rage.
I want to reccomend this book to you if you've read Lightning Thief and Sea of the Monsters. The whole series are totally awesome. Twisted fate, battle for life, Making friends... all sorts of stuff. Oh, and if you ever read the greek mythology, you should be able to understand better. So how about giving it a try?

Earthquake
“On 02/09/09, an enormous earthquake hit Indonesia, magnitude of 7.6.” Whoa, what a disaster it was. This is serious news you know. There was a devastating earthquake and had more than 50 victims found. In fact, it probably was the strongest quake I’ve felt in more than 4 years of living in Jakarta. “Here you can see houses demolished and shattered. For apartment buildings, the walls had cracks and the structure was destabilized.” the CNN reporter informed.
“What the heck is going on?” I shouted in a startled tone. That was the time I felt the word ‘Earthquake’ jolting down through me like a bolt of lightning, leaving me brain-sapped. I was still wasn’t really sure of what just happened, but could surely tell because of people running around and bellowing out loud that there was a pretty big problem here. I could see people in apartment buildings rushing down to the lobby. I was shocked, or should I say too shocked to make noise. My legs felt tons heavier. After some swearing, a memory shot through me.
“Class dismissed” the teacher informed us. I have plugged my earphone in, and was tuning the music volume close to max, but then I had an encounter with such a crowd over something. I squished in to get a better look, and saw its forked tongue and its long body. Starting into its vicious eyes, I immediately could identify it as a snake.
I wondered why it has been there with more than 200 kids bursting out of their classrooms and making such a racket. First I thought it was no big deal, but now I realized that snake had felt the earthquake coming. You see, most animals can feel better, or should I say much much better than the humans, so they can feel earthquakes or tsunami coming before the devastating happening about a day or even a week. But that didn’t really matter right now. All I could do was to simply wait impatiently for the rampage to stop.
About next 5 seconds of silenced delay felt like an eternity. When I came home, I was relieved nobody in my family got hurt. Dumping my backpack at the floor, I turned the TV on and switched the channel to CNN. “Breaking news: On 02/09/09, an enormous earthquake hit Indonesia, magnitude of 7.6. Specials
Specials
By Scott Westerfeld
*****
By Scott Westerfeld
*****
I finally finished the book Specials, which means I'm done with the Uglies triology (yay for that)! Anyways, I thought the book was really good. Looks like Mr.Westerfeld spent some time writing for that, because I could see that the book was as good as the first one, or even better.
Now this book is about Tally actually turning into a special. Not just a normal special, she is in some kind of organization called 'Cutters'. Cutters have the people who had escaped the city without getting detected all the way to Smoke, which is also like special force in the whole special group. But there is one big problem standing ahead of Cutters; the smokies have already built the New Smoke, after the previous Smoke that got subverted by Dr.Cable. These Smokies aren't the ones that Tally knew in the old days; they have all kinds of gears from the city, and they are always ready to go for an ambush. The Cutters will have to figure a way to destroy this city.
My best part of this book is when the Smokies ambushed Tally and Shay. There seemed to be a lot of smokies around because there were a mass of arrows shooting through the air like a bullet, but Tally's special infrared vision could'nt detect them. Thats when Tally and Shay figured that the Smokies had sneak suits on, which are special armor that turnes the user's body tempreture and the figure itself blend into the background. As soon as they worked that out, they turned off the infrared view and turned on the skintenna network to get help from the other cutters (skintenna network is like ummm... it's sort of like MSN connecting to the others that lets the user to talk to the other special but this one it can only be used by specials in their minds). Of course, it wasn't hard to dodge their wild arrows. After all, Tally and Shay were specials. Their super fast reflexes and their clear eye vision was more than enough to dodge them. However, despite of their abilities, one of them I mean David had a electrical stunner and shocked Shay into unconciousness. Smokies just had kidnapped the boss of the cutters.
I want to recommend this book to you if you have finished the following two books; Uglies and Pretties. This is because if you start reading specials right away you won't even get what the heck is going on and be perplexed. However, if you have met all the conditions to read this book, it just might be the perfect book for you to read.

Characterization of Mr.Westerfeld
In the book Pretties, Mr.Westerfeld obviously shows that Tally is the main character in the book. However, I think that Tally is both protagonist and antagonist. He clearly describes the view of the scenes in the book. Sometimes, when you mentally draw it in your head, you will figure out that how easy it is to know what is going on in the book.
On page 201, Mr.Westerfeld wrote a quote that said "And I'm not helping you either!' from Tally, which certainly describes that oTally cares about herself and Zane, her friend. In that part Zane and Tally had handcuffs on and they were trying to crush them off with a crusher in order to escape the city. But it was too dangerous and risky, so Tally had to stop him from the possible major injury on Zane's hand from the crusher which in reality, could actually liquifact the bone. This shows that Tally actually cares to other characters.
On page 184, Mr.Weterfeld wrote a quote that said 'Thats Tally Younglood' from 2 pretties who were in the hospital with Tally. Here Mr.Westerfeld shows that Tally is famous among the people between Uglies, Pretties and not to mention Specials. She got famous by her ultimate and super dangerous tricks that she used to pull up in Ugly days, and didn't get captured by Specials. This quote also explains that she is very smart, getting not seen by Specials, who detects everything that is going on in the city. Mr.Westerfeld did a great job expressing characters through their attributes.
On page 134, the author Scott Westerfeld wrote a quote that said "What, are you fashion-missing? Everybody does this" from Tally to Dr.Cable, Tally's worst fear. Here Mr.Westerfeld shows besides the popularity and a smart brain, Tally has shown her most feared character. To explain Dr.Cable, she is in charge of the specials, who have inhuman power, speed and reflexes through the operation they take. Their faces look beautiful, but cruelly beautiful as if a very pretty person half transformed into a werewolf. Anyways, at that part, Tally had a handcuff on which could be a big trouble if detected to Dr.Cable, so she lied and told her it was fashion. Here Mr.Westerfeld explains that Tally is nervous and scared by Dr.Cable. Another good description of Tally's characterization by Mr.Westerfeld.
Tally Youngblood is a very unexpectable and intelligent character and Mr.Westerfeld does a very good job of expressing it. Mr.Westerfeld is on one of my favorite authors list, and I will certaily keep reading his work. Keep up the good work Mr.Westerfeld!

Pretties
I have finished reading Uglies, and Pretties (YEAH! FINALLY). Now I guess I'll have to read Specials, which is the next book of Pretties. Now here I will write a couple of sentences about Pretties, but not Uglies because I've already written a whole blog entry about it in august.
Pretties is the next book of Uglies. It is exciting, but I still think that Uglies was more awesome and thirilling. Anyway, in the book, there is Tally Youngblood who just turned into a pretty. But there is a problem. Every Uglies that have surgery to become Pretties, they all have a tiny lesions in their brain; which means not only the looks that changes, the mind also gets changed. Now that she has realized this, she is going to the New Smoke to inform other people and look for a cure.
My best part of this book was when Tally and her friends jumped off the hot-air balloon to escape from the New Pretty Town and go to the New Smoke. They didn't have any bungee jackets, and the crash bracelets coudn't kick in because of the depth of the water below them. When her friends all jump, she hesitated because of her best-friends-for-life Peris, because he didn't want to go with them. But she came to a decision that she had to leave him behind and go. When she jumped down, she was startled because she was already very far away from the shore, and the water's depth was very deep after the flooding that happened last night. But luckily, she survived and made her way to her friends without a hoverboard, which meant she had to walk barefoot.

Earthquake, 02/09/09
02/09/09, there was an earthquake coming. Of course I was in the school when it all happened. In lunch time, a very strange thing happened. Well, I didn't see it myself, my social studies teacher had told me that there was a snake out in the grass area where there were more than 400 kids outside playing. That never happens. I've never even seen a snake out in the wild in my life. Well, after that, when the school was over about 3 hours later, I was going out to the drop-zone to get picked up by my driver. Suddenly, I felt ground shaking. I thought I was the only one who felt it, but I could tell that people were panicking, because I could see them running around.
Indonesia tends to get lot of earthquakes because it is located in the ring of fire and it is an island. There also was a tsunami warning, since indonesia is coastal. With all these conditions, it's impossible to never expect an earthquake to happen. Also, my friends and I all figured out that the snake came out because it had felt the earthquake moments before it occured. Animals feel the tiny bit of ground shaking and react like they never did. This one had magnitude of 7.4, which is strong enough to seriously damage an enormous area in such short time, which explains the epicenter of the earthquake being 40 kilometers out in the sea.
At least 33 people were killed by this disaster. They are still recording the death of people, which means there may be lot more then 33 victims. One reporter captured the buildings swaying, which seemed very serious to me. The earthquake subverted some of the houses that were near the epicenter. In the city, no buildings fell, but you could spot that there were some crack in the building and the walls. Again, with Indonesia being in the ring of fire and being coastal, people here better watch out.

Scott Westerfeld
Scott Westerfeld, author of many books that includes Uglies, Midnighters, and Levithan (about to come out) series. He was born on May 5, 1963 and was born in Dallas, Texas, USA. The jobs he had in his life so far includes factory worker (making lead soldiers),substitute teacher, textbook editor, software designer, and currently he is a ghost writer. He says that he is a vegeterian, and never wears jeans(NEVER!). He also said that he just bought a telescope (Which I think is kind of random), and he can speak English, Japanese, Spanish and even Latin! I also found out that he also likes playing basketball, cricket, Tennis. I guess he is probably fit because he does all sorts of exercises and sports. He loves Mexican and Italian food, my guess is that it's becuase he was born in Mexico and usually Italian food are awesome for everybody. Also one interesting fact is that he has been married for quite long and he doesn't plan to have a son or daughter. If you read his books, you'll know more about him as you go through the books. You can see the way he thinks about the future, and you'll eventually know that why people call him a ghost writer.

Uglies
Uglies
By Scott Westerfeld
*****
*****
You get to have an operation that turns you into a pretty from an ugly when you finally turn 16. But for Tally, it's diffrent. Her friend Shay has got the same birthday as Tally, but she doesn't want to turn pretty at all. So she decides to escape uglyville, to a place called Smoke. Since Tally has been her best friend for a while, she has to take responsibility for where Shay's gone and why she has left. The problem is, that untill she finds Shay, she will never turn pretty; which means ugly for life. Now Tally will be forced to take an unexpected jorney to find Shay.
My best part of this book is when Tally goes into the 'Special Circumstances'. This is the place where people who have 'Special Circumstances' for the operations have to go. The place is full of Specials, who are pretty, but cruely beautiful, with a cold look on their faces. Anyhow, a Specialist called Dr.Cable sends Tally to find Shay, which Tally didn't want to. The conversation between them are very interesting, which explains why it is my favourite part of the book.
I really want to recommend this book to you becuase it has stunning turnovers and the book itself is just fantastic. Addicting, and becuase there are whole series of this book, you will never get sick of it. I have a feeling that you will totally LOVE this book.

Typhoon Morakot
Recently, an immense typhoon moved towards taiwan. It's been already predicted previously the tragedy, and many people moved out before the storm began. But people who haven't fled yet may have hard time surviving the heavy rain. Anyways, there were some very intense floodings, serious mudslidesand landslides. There are more than 500 hundred victims and many more missing, and with wind packing 89mph (143 kph) threatening the entire lsland to soak. Typhoon Morakot is also the worst typhoon happened in 50 years, which explains the significant increase of the rainfall in such short time and the victims that it had.
Up: An infrared view of landslides happening in the valley of geysers.
Now here is a satellite view of the typhoon Morakot. You can easliy notice the eye, and just witness how big it is. This typhoon should be moving upwards, which means it may threaten countries like Japan, Korea, or China. But those countries may not have much problems as taiwanese do, because it's landscape is flat, unlike taiwan that has tall mountains surrounding, which makes the water to stay in place instead of speading out. However, countries like taiwan tends to prepare well for typhoons. So let's see what kinds of solutions taiwan have.

Yong Hee in 6th grade! YAY
Hi my name is Yong Hee Lee. I just came here in middle school, and I think I'm kinda enjoying it here. Most of all, I love the super-good ramen from the ttowa-ttowa, and the 15 minute breaks. Anyway, things I hate... I don't like eating broccoli, strawberry secret and purple snow (no offence to people who like those drinks) and ummm;; I guess thats it, because I can't think of one. I like playing basketball. And infact, I am thinking about trying out for the team. I do like playing my violin, and I've been playing for 3 years. If I had to compare myself to an animal, I'd be a bear, because I work hard in summer and sleep in the winter (Like I study hard in summer and sleep in winter break or something like that). Oh and I forget to tell that I have a brother in 8th grade, Seung Hee and I think that he is a awesome brother but he can be scary sometimes. Well, I guess that's it (I have more things to tell you 'bout myself but I can't think of one so whatever)!
