I finally finished the book Specials, which means I'm done with the Uglies triology (yay for that)! Anyways, I thought the book was really good. Looks like Mr.Westerfeld spent some time writing for that, because I could see that the book was as good as the first one, or even better.

Now this book is about Tally actually turning into a special. Not just a normal special, she is in some kind of organization called 'Cutters'. Cutters have the people who had escaped the city without getting detected all the way to Smoke, which is also like special force in the whole special group. But there is one big problem standing ahead of Cutters; the smokies have already built the New Smoke, after the previous Smoke that got subverted by Dr.Cable. These Smokies aren't the ones that Tally knew in the old days; they have all kinds of gears from the city, and they are always ready to go for an ambush. The Cutters will have to figure a way to destroy this city.

My best part of this book is when the Smokies ambushed Tally and Shay. There seemed to be a lot of smokies around because there were a mass of arrows shooting through the air like a bullet, but Tally's special infrared vision could'nt detect them. Thats when Tally and Shay figured that the Smokies had sneak suits on, which are special armor that turnes the user's body tempreture and the figure itself blend into the background. As soon as they worked that out, they turned off the infrared view and turned on the skintenna network to get help from the other cutters (skintenna network is like ummm... it's sort of like MSN connecting to the others that lets the user to talk to the other special but this one it can only be used by specials in their minds). Of course, it wasn't hard to dodge their wild arrows. After all, Tally and Shay were specials. Their super fast reflexes and their clear eye vision was more than enough to dodge them. However, despite of their abilities, one of them I mean David had a electrical stunner and shocked Shay into unconciousness. Smokies just had kidnapped the boss of the cutters.

I want to recommend this book to you if you have finished the following two books; Uglies and Pretties. This is because if you start reading specials right away you won't even get what the heck is going on and be perplexed. However, if you have met all the conditions to read this book, it just might be the perfect book for you to read.

Characterization of Mr.Westerfeld

In the book Pretties, Mr.Westerfeld obviously shows that Tally is the main character in the book. However, I think that Tally is both protagonist and antagonist. He clearly describes the view of the scenes in the book. Sometimes, when you mentally draw it in your head, you will figure out that how easy it is to know what is going on in the book.

On page 201, Mr.Westerfeld wrote a quote that said "And I'm not helping you either!' from Tally, which certainly describes that oTally cares about herself and Zane, her friend. In that part Zane and Tally had handcuffs on and they were trying to crush them off with a crusher in order to escape the city. But it was too dangerous and risky, so Tally had to stop him from the possible major injury on Zane's hand from the crusher which in reality, could actually liquifact the bone. This shows that Tally actually cares to other characters.

On page 184, Mr.Weterfeld wrote a quote that said 'Thats Tally Younglood' from 2 pretties who were in the hospital with Tally. Here Mr.Westerfeld shows that Tally is famous among the people between Uglies, Pretties and not to mention Specials. She got famous by her ultimate and super dangerous tricks that she used to pull up in Ugly days, and didn't get captured by Specials. This quote also explains that she is very smart, getting not seen by Specials, who detects everything that is going on in the city. Mr.Westerfeld did a great job expressing characters through their attributes.

On page 134, the author Scott Westerfeld wrote a quote that said "What, are you fashion-missing? Everybody does this" from Tally to Dr.Cable, Tally's worst fear. Here Mr.Westerfeld shows besides the popularity and a smart brain, Tally has shown her most feared character. To explain Dr.Cable, she is in charge of the specials, who have inhuman power, speed and reflexes through the operation they take. Their faces look beautiful, but cruelly beautiful as if a very pretty person half transformed into a werewolf. Anyways, at that part, Tally had a handcuff on which could be a big trouble if detected to Dr.Cable, so she lied and told her it was fashion. Here Mr.Westerfeld explains that Tally is nervous and scared by Dr.Cable. Another good description of Tally's characterization by Mr.Westerfeld.

Tally Youngblood is a very unexpectable and intelligent character and Mr.Westerfeld does a very good job of expressing it. Mr.Westerfeld is on one of my favorite authors list, and I will certaily keep reading his work. Keep up the good work Mr.Westerfeld!

Pretties

I have finished reading Uglies, and Pretties (YEAH! FINALLY). Now I guess I'll have to read Specials, which is the next book of Pretties. Now here I will write a couple of sentences about Pretties, but not Uglies because I've already written a whole blog entry about it in august.

Pretties is the next book of Uglies. It is exciting, but I still think that Uglies was more awesome and thirilling. Anyway, in the book, there is Tally Youngblood who just turned into a pretty. But there is a problem. Every Uglies that have surgery to become Pretties, they all have a tiny lesions in their brain; which means not only the looks that changes, the mind also gets changed. Now that she has realized this, she is going to the New Smoke to inform other people and look for a cure.

My best part of this book was when Tally and her friends jumped off the hot-air balloon to escape from the New Pretty Town and go to the New Smoke. They didn't have any bungee jackets, and the crash bracelets coudn't kick in because of the depth of the water below them. When her friends all jump, she hesitated because of her best-friends-for-life Peris, because he didn't want to go with them. But she came to a decision that she had to leave him behind and go. When she jumped down, she was startled because she was already very far away from the shore, and the water's depth was very deep after the flooding that happened last night. But luckily, she survived and made her way to her friends without a hoverboard, which meant she had to walk barefoot.

Earthquake, 02/09/09

02/09/09, there was an earthquake coming. Of course I was in the school when it all happened. In lunch time, a very strange thing happened. Well, I didn't see it myself, my social studies teacher had told me that there was a snake out in the grass area where there were more than 400 kids outside playing. That never happens. I've never even seen a snake out in the wild in my life. Well, after that, when the school was over about 3 hours later, I was going out to the drop-zone to get picked up by my driver. Suddenly, I felt ground shaking. I thought I was the only one who felt it, but I could tell that people were panicking, because I could see them running around.

Indonesia tends to get lot of earthquakes because it is located in the ring of fire and it is an island. There also was a tsunami warning, since indonesia is coastal. With all these conditions, it's impossible to never expect an earthquake to happen. Also, my friends and I all figured out that the snake came out because it had felt the earthquake moments before it occured. Animals feel the tiny bit of ground shaking and react like they never did. This one had magnitude of 7.4, which is strong enough to seriously damage an enormous area in such short time, which explains the epicenter of the earthquake being 40 kilometers out in the sea.

At least 33 people were killed by this disaster. They are still recording the death of people, which means there may be lot more then 33 victims. One reporter captured the buildings swaying, which seemed very serious to me. The earthquake subverted some of the houses that were near the epicenter. In the city, no buildings fell, but you could spot that there were some crack in the building and the walls. Again, with Indonesia being in the ring of fire and being coastal, people here better watch out.
