Trip to water treatment plant

As my classmates and I rode on the bus to the water treatment plant, we saw a dirty river full of garbages people threw. And at that time, I had no idea that this water here was going to be potable. In this post, I will be talking about the infrastucture of the water treatment plant.

The first step is percolating the big pieces of garbages. The first thing I saw was a huge gate and the river water going through the long and thin metal poles. The gate collected the big pieces of garbage, for example. tires, cans, bottles, bannana peelings, etc... you get the idea.

The second step is aeration, which is oxigentating the water, adding mineral. In the treatment plant, there is a huge turbo swirling around the water like a vortex. What it does is that when the turbo is spinning, it's giving oxygen to the water that didn't have any oxygen.

The thrid step is adding alum. Alum is a chemical that causes the dirt particles to come together and make a floc, which makes it easier for the next process to collect the dirt particles out of the water.

The fourth step is sedimentation. They let the water stay still for a while until all the flocs of dirt particles settle to the ground. At this point, water is saturated. Also, an interesting fact I've found out is that the dirt particles don't just get thrown away. In fact, they use it to help build houses in the kampung areas.

The fifth step is filtration, and disinfection. The final filter takes out all the leftover flocs and other garbages that made through the steps. After getting rid of them, they add a chemical called clorn, which disinfects the water, destroying all the bacteria left.

Finally, the last step is checking the water qualities. In this step, people in the lab check the water is clean or not. The more infected the water is, the color gets yellower, and if it is safe to drink, the color is transparent. This is a very important step to go through, because even if the water is filtered, there might be tiny bits of dirt particles still remaining in the water.

When I came back from the trip, I learned TONS of stuff there. I have to say I was surprised at how much I learned. I've seen things I've never seen before, and I think it was a great experience to have, learning about how and where the water we drink everyday come from.

The Tiger

Evaporation: Is a process when water changes its liquid form to vapor form (gaseuous).






Condensation: A process when gaseous form of water changes into liquid form.

Precipitation: Is any form of water that falls on earth's surface (Rain, hail, snow, freezing rain.)

Infiltration: Penetration of water (liquid form) going trough earth's surface.

Beowulf

Just finished the book Beowulf! The book was recommended by my good english teacher, Mr.Hughes. He told me it was a serious story but written in comic version. After I looked at it, I kinda liked the drawing by Gareth Hinds, so what the heck. I'll give it a try. So here is a story about a brave man called Beowulf.

Beowulf, a young man who was born with such great power and intellect. They say it was a gift from god. Unlike all other men, he battles with monsters and slices them with great ease, and defeats them. One day, he was called to reinforce the great king

Hrothgar, a man who valued Beowulf when he was a child. A fiend called Grendel was killing Hrothgar's men and was ruining the great hall that Hrothgar has built. When Beowulf arrived on Hrothgar's land, he had a big feast before the fearsome fight. The following night, as usual, Grendel came. He and Beowulf had a fierce battle, and they fought for their own victories. At the end, Beowulf had cut Grendel's arm and Grendel fled. He trophied the arm and hanged it on the roof of the great hall. Beowulf was given many prizes and jewels from the great king Hrothgar. But he knew that he had another enemy to face; Grendel's mother, the sea serpent.

Now there's a lot of exciting actions, and the story itself is pretty cool. And I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the drawing by Gareth Hinds. There's a movie about this story, and you might've watched it. You should give it a try. This comic version is not so long, and it is easy to read and understand because again, thanks to Mr.Gareth. :D

The Titan's Curse

Recently I finished the book "Titan's Curse." I took a long time to put a book on the blog huh? Well, I will try to work on NOT abandoning books from now on. For the sake of blogging, I decided to put a post up. Here goes.

The Titan's curse is about a 14-year boy called Percy Jackson and his friends saving his friends. He is the son of Poseidon (The god of sea). There is also Grover the satyr, Thaila the son of Zeus (God of the sky), Zoe and Bianca the hunters. Together they go on a journey to free Annabeth (Daughter of Athena, the goddess of moon) and Artemis, who is a goddess of hunting herself from Atlas (Titan who is holding up the sky) and the Titan Lord. However, there is an oracle that said 2 will die in the journey. With that thought in mind, they still decide to go on the adventure. Read the book to find out!

My best part of the book was when Atlas and Artemis was having a fight. I have to admit that the author did a very good job of describing the situation. Atlas fighting with a huge javelin and Artemis fighting with double edged wicked dagger as long as her arm. They tried to kill each other with rage, but Atlas's power overwhelmed Artemis. Then she had a plan. That time, Percy was holding up the sky, which should've been Atlas. She gave a signal to Percy to back out from the sky when she kicked Atlas in that direction. Percy understood, and braced himself from possible death. When Artemis kicked Atlas in the direction, Percy quickly rolled out of the way and the sky almost squished Atlas. He managed to get up and hold up the sky, but he burst out with rage.

I want to reccomend this book to you if you've read Lightning Thief and Sea of the Monsters. The whole series are totally awesome. Twisted fate, battle for life, Making friends... all sorts of stuff. Oh, and if you ever read the greek mythology, you should be able to understand better. So how about giving it a try?

Earthquake


“On 02/09/09, an enormous earthquake hit Indonesia, magnitude of 7.6.” Whoa, what a disaster it was. This is serious news you know. There was a devastating earthquake and had more than 50 victims found. In fact, it probably was the strongest quake I’ve felt in more than 4 years of living in Jakarta. “Here you can see houses demolished and shattered. For apartment buildings, the walls had cracks and the structure was destabilized.” the CNN reporter informed.

“What the heck is going on?” I shouted in a startled tone. That was the time I felt the word ‘Earthquake’ jolting down through me like a bolt of lightning, leaving me brain-sapped. I was still wasn’t really sure of what just happened, but could surely tell because of people running around and bellowing out loud that there was a pretty big problem here. I could see people in apartment buildings rushing down to the lobby. I was shocked, or should I say too shocked to make noise. My legs felt tons heavier. After some swearing, a memory shot through me.

“Class dismissed” the teacher informed us. I have plugged my earphone in, and was tuning the music volume close to max, but then I had an encounter with such a crowd over something. I squished in to get a better look, and saw its forked tongue and its long body. Starting into its vicious eyes, I immediately could identify it as a snake.

I wondered why it has been there with more than 200 kids bursting out of their classrooms and making such a racket. First I thought it was no big deal, but now I realized that snake had felt the earthquake coming. You see, most animals can feel better, or should I say much much better than the humans, so they can feel earthquakes or tsunami coming before the devastating happening about a day or even a week. But that didn’t really matter right now. All I could do was to simply wait impatiently for the rampage to stop.

About next 5 seconds of silenced delay felt like an eternity. When I came home, I was relieved nobody in my family got hurt. Dumping my backpack at the floor, I turned the TV on and switched the channel to CNN. “Breaking news: On 02/09/09, an enormous earthquake hit Indonesia, magnitude of 7.6. Here you can see houses demolished and shattered. For apartment buildings, the walls had cracks and the structure was destabilized”. The reporter continues...
