Beowulf

Just finished the book Beowulf! The book was recommended by my good english teacher, Mr.Hughes. He told me it was a serious story but written in comic version. After I looked at it, I kinda liked the drawing by Gareth Hinds, so what the heck. I'll give it a try. So here is a story about a brave man called Beowulf.

Beowulf, a young man who was born with such great power and intellect. They say it was a gift from god. Unlike all other men, he battles with monsters and slices them with great ease, and defeats them. One day, he was called to reinforce the great king

Hrothgar, a man who valued Beowulf when he was a child. A fiend called Grendel was killing Hrothgar's men and was ruining the great hall that Hrothgar has built. When Beowulf arrived on Hrothgar's land, he had a big feast before the fearsome fight. The following night, as usual, Grendel came. He and Beowulf had a fierce battle, and they fought for their own victories. At the end, Beowulf had cut Grendel's arm and Grendel fled. He trophied the arm and hanged it on the roof of the great hall. Beowulf was given many prizes and jewels from the great king Hrothgar. But he knew that he had another enemy to face; Grendel's mother, the sea serpent.

Now there's a lot of exciting actions, and the story itself is pretty cool. And I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the drawing by Gareth Hinds. There's a movie about this story, and you might've watched it. You should give it a try. This comic version is not so long, and it is easy to read and understand because again, thanks to Mr.Gareth. :D

The Titan's Curse

Recently I finished the book "Titan's Curse." I took a long time to put a book on the blog huh? Well, I will try to work on NOT abandoning books from now on. For the sake of blogging, I decided to put a post up. Here goes.

The Titan's curse is about a 14-year boy called Percy Jackson and his friends saving his friends. He is the son of Poseidon (The god of sea). There is also Grover the satyr, Thaila the son of Zeus (God of the sky), Zoe and Bianca the hunters. Together they go on a journey to free Annabeth (Daughter of Athena, the goddess of moon) and Artemis, who is a goddess of hunting herself from Atlas (Titan who is holding up the sky) and the Titan Lord. However, there is an oracle that said 2 will die in the journey. With that thought in mind, they still decide to go on the adventure. Read the book to find out!

My best part of the book was when Atlas and Artemis was having a fight. I have to admit that the author did a very good job of describing the situation. Atlas fighting with a huge javelin and Artemis fighting with double edged wicked dagger as long as her arm. They tried to kill each other with rage, but Atlas's power overwhelmed Artemis. Then she had a plan. That time, Percy was holding up the sky, which should've been Atlas. She gave a signal to Percy to back out from the sky when she kicked Atlas in that direction. Percy understood, and braced himself from possible death. When Artemis kicked Atlas in the direction, Percy quickly rolled out of the way and the sky almost squished Atlas. He managed to get up and hold up the sky, but he burst out with rage.

I want to reccomend this book to you if you've read Lightning Thief and Sea of the Monsters. The whole series are totally awesome. Twisted fate, battle for life, Making friends... all sorts of stuff. Oh, and if you ever read the greek mythology, you should be able to understand better. So how about giving it a try?

I finally finished the book Specials, which means I'm done with the Uglies triology (yay for that)! Anyways, I thought the book was really good. Looks like Mr.Westerfeld spent some time writing for that, because I could see that the book was as good as the first one, or even better.

Now this book is about Tally actually turning into a special. Not just a normal special, she is in some kind of organization called 'Cutters'. Cutters have the people who had escaped the city without getting detected all the way to Smoke, which is also like special force in the whole special group. But there is one big problem standing ahead of Cutters; the smokies have already built the New Smoke, after the previous Smoke that got subverted by Dr.Cable. These Smokies aren't the ones that Tally knew in the old days; they have all kinds of gears from the city, and they are always ready to go for an ambush. The Cutters will have to figure a way to destroy this city.

My best part of this book is when the Smokies ambushed Tally and Shay. There seemed to be a lot of smokies around because there were a mass of arrows shooting through the air like a bullet, but Tally's special infrared vision could'nt detect them. Thats when Tally and Shay figured that the Smokies had sneak suits on, which are special armor that turnes the user's body tempreture and the figure itself blend into the background. As soon as they worked that out, they turned off the infrared view and turned on the skintenna network to get help from the other cutters (skintenna network is like ummm... it's sort of like MSN connecting to the others that lets the user to talk to the other special but this one it can only be used by specials in their minds). Of course, it wasn't hard to dodge their wild arrows. After all, Tally and Shay were specials. Their super fast reflexes and their clear eye vision was more than enough to dodge them. However, despite of their abilities, one of them I mean David had a electrical stunner and shocked Shay into unconciousness. Smokies just had kidnapped the boss of the cutters.

I want to recommend this book to you if you have finished the following two books; Uglies and Pretties. This is because if you start reading specials right away you won't even get what the heck is going on and be perplexed. However, if you have met all the conditions to read this book, it just might be the perfect book for you to read.

Pretties

I have finished reading Uglies, and Pretties (YEAH! FINALLY). Now I guess I'll have to read Specials, which is the next book of Pretties. Now here I will write a couple of sentences about Pretties, but not Uglies because I've already written a whole blog entry about it in august.

Pretties is the next book of Uglies. It is exciting, but I still think that Uglies was more awesome and thirilling. Anyway, in the book, there is Tally Youngblood who just turned into a pretty. But there is a problem. Every Uglies that have surgery to become Pretties, they all have a tiny lesions in their brain; which means not only the looks that changes, the mind also gets changed. Now that she has realized this, she is going to the New Smoke to inform other people and look for a cure.

My best part of this book was when Tally and her friends jumped off the hot-air balloon to escape from the New Pretty Town and go to the New Smoke. They didn't have any bungee jackets, and the crash bracelets coudn't kick in because of the depth of the water below them. When her friends all jump, she hesitated because of her best-friends-for-life Peris, because he didn't want to go with them. But she came to a decision that she had to leave him behind and go. When she jumped down, she was startled because she was already very far away from the shore, and the water's depth was very deep after the flooding that happened last night. But luckily, she survived and made her way to her friends without a hoverboard, which meant she had to walk barefoot.

Scott Westerfeld

Scott Westerfeld, author of many books that includes Uglies, Midnighters, and Levithan (about to come out) series. He was born on May 5, 1963 and was born in Dallas, Texas, USA. The jobs he had in his life so far includes factory worker (making lead soldiers),substitute teacher,textbook editor,software designer, and currently he is a ghost writer. He says that he is a vegeterian, and never wears jeans(NEVER!). He also said that he just bought a telescope (Which I think is kind of random), and he can speak English, Japanese, Spanish and even Latin! I also found out that he also likes playing basketball, cricket, Tennis. I guess he is probably fit because he does all sorts of exercises and sports. He loves Mexican and Italian food, my guess is that it's becuase he was born in Mexico and usually Italian food are awesome for everybody. Also one interesting fact is that he has been married for quite long and he doesn't plan to have a son or daughter. If you read his books, you'll know more about him as you go through the books. You can see the way he thinks about the future, and you'll eventually know that why people call him a ghost writer.

Uglies

You get to have an operation that turns you into a pretty from an ugly when you finally turn 16. But for Tally, it's diffrent. Her friend Shay has got the same birthday as Tally, but she doesn't want to turn pretty at all. So she decides to escape uglyville, to a place called Smoke. Since Tally has been her best friend for a while, she has to take responsibility for where Shay's gone and why she has left. The problem is, that untill she finds Shay, she will never turn pretty; which means ugly for life. Now Tally will be forced to take an unexpected jorney to find Shay.

My best part of this book is when Tally goes into the 'Special Circumstances'. This is the place where people who have 'Special Circumstances' for the operations have to go. The place is full of Specials, who are pretty, but cruely beautiful, with a cold look on their faces. Anyhow, a Specialist called Dr.Cable sends Tally to find Shay, which Tally didn't want to. The conversation between them are very interesting, which explains why it is my favourite part of the book.

I really want to recommend this book to you becuase it has stunning turnovers and the book itself is just fantastic. Addicting, and becuase there are whole series of this book, you will never get sick of it. I have a feeling that you will totally LOVE this book.
